Trail to City: One Wardrobe for the Mountains and the Old Town

Five days in the Dolomites. Three in Verona. One suitcase. The trick is not packing less — it is packing pieces that work twice.

There is a packing problem that only shows up on a trip like this one.

Pack for the mountains and you arrive in the piazza looking like you have come to service the plumbing. Pack for the city and you are three kilometres up a scree path in something that does not breathe. So most people do the obvious thing — pack both. In addition to being our retail in charge, she runs a fashion business, has a family, and has been steadily adding trail time to a diary that was already full. That is a harder brief than it sounds. Most technical apparel is designed to solve a problem and looks like it. Most fashion-led “outdoorsy” clothing looks the part and fails when the weather turns.

Why this is a Korean outdoor problem, already solved

Korean outdoor brands have been working on this longer than most, for a straightforward reason. In Korea, hiking is not a specialist pursuit you drive four hours to reach. It is a Saturday morning on a mountain inside the city, followed by lunch somewhere you would not want to arrive looking dishevelled. The clothing evolved to carry a person through both halves of that day.

Kolon Sport was founded in Seoul in 1973 — one of Korea’s first outdoor brands, with a long heritage in the country’s mountaineering culture and the technology that still outfits its climbers and thru-walkers today. Windproof and water-repellent, lighter and more breathable than GORE-TEX — but not fully waterproof. For wind and light showers, and for people who run hot.

PrimaLoft

Synthetic insulation that keeps working when wet, which is the argument against down for shoulder-season travel. Light fill for aircon and cool mornings; heavy for real winter.

EggLite

A 6-denier ultralight nylon, wind and water-repellent, packing down to roughly the size of a grapefruit. The layer you carry all day without noticing.

1Every piece must earn its place twice

Before anything goes in the bag it has to answer two questions — where does this work on the trail? and where does this work at dinner? A piece that answers one is a piece you are carrying for half the trip.

Leggings pass. Zip-off convertible trousers usually do not — they solve a real problem and announce it loudly.

2Fix the palette before you pack

Two neutrals and one accent, then buy within it. Capsule wardrobes do not work because the pieces are individually versatile; they work because every piece goes with every other piece. Three bottoms and four tops in one palette is twelve outfits. In four unrelated colours it is about four.

Verona has a Saturday market in Piazza delle Erbe beneath the Torre dei Lamberti. The Dolomite valleys have small producers selling things worth carrying home. Neither is much use if your bag was full when you left Singapore.

Common questions

Is hiking clothing suitable for everyday wear?

Some of it, and the difference is design rather than performance. Look for pieces without large logos, reflective panels or high-visibility colours, and for cuts close to normal proportions. Do I need GORE-TEX in Singapore?
