Care & Maintenance
Down needs a little care and very little washing.
- Wash only at the end of the season. Frequent washing shortens the life of an ultralight shell
- Use a down-specific detergent — never ordinary laundry liquid, and never fabric softener
- Cold water, gentle cycle or hand wash. Do not bleach, do not iron
- Tumble dry on low heat if you have a dryer; otherwise hang away from direct sunlight and be patient — down takes hours
- Patting the garment as it dries helps restore loft
- Store it loose, not compressed. Months in a stuff sack flatten down permanently
This is our general guidance for down garments. Check the care label sewn into yours for the definitive instructions — we can request Montbell's care sheet for this style if you would like it.
Tips from X-Boundaries
If you are choosing between this and the Superior Down Jacket, the question is simply whether you want the hood. A hood is worth 15 g of packed bulk and a great deal of comfort on an exposed ridge or a night bus with the air-conditioning on full.
Layer it under a rain shell rather than over one. The 10-denier fabric is strong for its weight but pack straps and rock will find it eventually.
Japanese sizing runs closer to the body than European. Between sizes, or planning a fleece beneath? Take the larger — or come in and we will fit it with you.
