Montbell's lined down layer. 800 fill power EX Down between a ripstop shell and a taffeta lining, and — unusually for down at this weight — a water-repellent finish with no perfluorinated chemistry in it at all.
Specification
- Insulation: 800 fill power EX Down
- Shell: 20-denier Ballistic nylon ripstop, PFAS-free water-repellent finish
- Lining: 20-denier Ballistic nylon taffeta, anti-static finish
- Weight: 321 g; 332 g including the stuff sack
- Model: 1101729
Features
- Fully lined — the taffeta slides over a base layer instead of clinging to it
- Anti-static lining: no crackle, no hair standing on end when you take it off
- Box-baffle quilting
- Collared, no hood — layers cleanly beneath a shell
- PFAS-free water repellency
Care & Maintenance
Down needs a little care and very little washing.
- Wash only at the end of the season
- Use a down-specific detergent — never ordinary laundry liquid, and never fabric softener
- Cold water, gentle cycle or hand wash. Do not bleach, do not iron
- Tumble dry on low heat if you have a dryer; otherwise hang away from direct sunlight and be patient — down takes hours
- Patting the garment as it dries helps restore loft
- Store it loose, not compressed. Months in a stuff sack flatten down permanently
- A PFAS-free finish is more easily worn down than the old chemistry. Reproofing after a wash keeps it working
This is our general guidance for down garments. Check the care label sewn into yours for the definitive instructions — we can request Montbell's care sheet for this style if you would like it.
Tips from X-Boundaries
The PFAS-free finish is the reason to look twice at this one. Most water-repellent outdoor kit still uses perfluorinated chemistry; this does not, and it gives up very little to get there. If that matters to you, this is a rare thing at this weight.
At 321 g it is heavier than the Superior Down Jacket and warmer for it — the full lining is what you feel. If you want the lightest thing that works, take the Superior. If you want the one that feels like a proper jacket rather than a packable emergency layer, take this.
Japanese sizing runs closer to the body than European. Size up if you are between two, or come in and we will fit it with you.
