Care & Maintenance
Down needs a little care and very little washing.
- Wash only at the end of the season
- Use a down-specific detergent — never ordinary laundry liquid, and never fabric softener
- Cold water, gentle cycle or hand wash. Do not bleach, do not iron
- Tumble dry on low heat if you have a dryer; otherwise hang away from direct sunlight and be patient — down takes hours
- Patting the garment as it dries helps restore loft
- Store it loose, not compressed. Months in a stuff sack flatten down permanently
- A PFAS-free finish is more easily worn down than the old chemistry. Reproofing after a wash keeps it working
This is our general guidance for down garments. Check the care label sewn into yours for the definitive instructions — we can request Montbell's care sheet for this style if you would like it.
Tips from X-Boundaries
A down vest is the most underrated layer in an outdoor wardrobe. It warms your core, leaves your arms free to work, and does not overheat you the moment you start walking uphill — which is exactly when a full jacket comes off and goes back in the pack.
At 237 g it is the piece to reach for on a cool trailhead morning, over a base layer under a shell on a cold day, or on its own in an air-conditioned office. Pair it with the Neige jacket and you have a two-piece system that covers most of Asia's shoulder seasons.
Japanese sizing runs closer to the body than European. Size up if you are between two, or plan to wear it over a fleece.
