- Merino is the reason to pay more than for a fleece gaiter. It keeps working when damp, and it does not develop the smell a synthetic gaiter gets after three days of breathing through it.
- A gaiter beats a scarf under a pack strap — nothing to come loose, nothing trailing, and it pulls up over the chin when the wind turns.
- Wool needs gentler washing than synthetics. Cool water, no tumble dryer, and it will last years.
